Mário Vilalva (* 1953 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian diplomat .

Life

Vilalva studied law at the Universidade do Distrito Federal in Rio de Janeiro. In 1976 he joined the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He initially worked in the South America department and the Africa department . In 1978 he went to the United States at the Brazilian Embassy in Washington, DC , where he served as the second embassy secretary until 1982. This was followed by a deployment as the first embassy secretary at the embassy in Pretoria in South Africa until 1985 . He then moved to Rome , Italy , until he returned to the Foreign Ministry in 1987, where he worked in the Department of Scientific, Technical and Technological Cooperation. In 1988 he moved to the Secretariat for Bilateral Political Affairs. In 1990 he joined the protocol service of the Brazilian Presidential Office.

In 1991 he went to the Brazilian embassy in Portugal in Lisbon . From 1993 he coordinated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until he became Chief of Protocol of the Ministry in 1995. In 1996 he took over the deputy management of the house. From 1993 to 1996 he was on the staff of Foreign Ministers Celso Amorim and Luiz Felipe Lampreia . This was followed by a three-year assignment as Consul General in Boston , USA.

In 1999 he returned to Brazil and became Secretary for International Affairs and shortly thereafter Executive Secretary for External Funding in the Ministry of Planning, State Budget and Administration. In 2000 he returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as General Director of the Trade Promotion Department.

He was then from 2006 to 2010 as the Brazilian ambassador in Santiago de Chile in Chile used and from 2010 to 2016 in Lisbon, Portugal. On November 8, 2016, he became ambassador to Germany .

From 2018 to 2019 he was president of the Brazilian trade and investment promotion company, officially Agência Brasileira de Promoção de Exportações e Investimentos (Apex-Brasil). Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo Vilalva's resignation announced on April 9, 2019 .

Mário Vilalva is married and has four daughters.
