Araújo (2019)

Ernesto Henrique Fraga Araújo (born May 15, 1967 in Porto Alegre , Rio Grande do Sul ) is a Brazilian diplomat, politician and Brazilian Foreign Minister since January 1, 2019 .

Education and career

Araújo was born in Porto Alegre in 1967. He completed his studies at the Universidade de Brasília , where he studied linguistics and literature , and was trained as a diplomat at the Rio Branco Institute . He then started working for the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From 1991 to 1995 he worked in the Department of Foreign Affairs for Mercosur Affairs and from 2007 to July 2010 he was Deputy Head of the Brazilian Embassy in Ottawa ( Canada ). In June 2018, he was promoted to first-class minister in the Brazilian External Action Service, a rank for professional diplomats that enables them to work as ambassadors. According to the custom of the Brazilian External Action Service, first-class ministers are referred to as "ambassadors" even if they have not yet taken over the management of an embassy, as was the case with Araújo.

Following the election of Jair Bolsonaro as Brazilian President in October 2018, the newly promoted Ambassador Araújo was promoted from President 2019 to Foreign Minister of the new government. This choice was considered surprising, as Araújo was still largely unknown until then and was not considered an influential person in the Brazilian Foreign Ministry. Bolsonaro is said to have made him Foreign Minister on the recommendation of the conservative columnist Olavo de Carvalho .

Araújo took office as Foreign Minister on January 1, 2019. On January 8, 2019, he asked diplomats to inform the UN that Brazil had withdrawn from the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration . In April 2019 he met the German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas for bilateral talks in Brasilia .

Views

Araújo takes a number of highly conservative and controversial views. He praised US President Donald Trump for his nationalist rhetoric and claims that he is restoring Western values that have been challenged by nihilism , which he believes is the West's new enemy and has replaced communism . He praised the Russian neo-fascist Alexander Dugin , whose books, according to Araújo, "should be studied". He advocated conspiracy theories that man-made climate change was a communist conspiracy to undermine Western countries and support China's growth. At the same time he lamented the "criminalization" of red meat , petroleum and heterosexual sex. On his blog he wrote that globalism is based on cultural Marxism and "is essentially directed against people and against Christians". He described National Socialism as a left movement.

During the reign of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva , he still largely represented the foreign policy positions of the left government. He defended Venezuela's membership under Hugo Chavez in Mercosur. So some see his recent statements as an attempt to please Bolsonaro, who takes similar positions.

Personal

His father, Henrique Fonseca de Araújo , worked as the attorney general of the Brazilian military dictatorship. During his tenure, Henrique Fonseca de Araújo prevented the extradition of Gustav Wagner , a Nazi officer and deputy commander of the Sobibór extermination camp , to Germany. His son defended this and stated that his father had only acted according to the laws of the time.

He is married and has a daughter. Araújo is a practicing Catholic . As an author, he has so far written a volume of poetry, three novels and contributions to economic policy.
