Olavo Luiz Pimentel de Carvalho (born April 29, 1947 in Campinas , Brazil ) is a Brazilian conservative journalist and essayist who represents esoteric and conspiracy ideological positions.

Life

Carvalho is the son of the lawyer Luiz Gonzaga de Carvalho and the housewife Nicéa Pimentel de Carvalho.

Due to the early death of his father, Olavo de Carvalho started working at the age of 15, and he has worked as a journalist since he was 18. During the Brazilian military dictatorship , he joined the Partido Comunista Brasileiro (PCB), one of the communist parties in Brazil . After a short time he resigned.

Afterwards Carvalho devoted himself to his “self-discovery” and self- taught himself in comparative religious studies , philosophy , logic , symbolism and astrology , which he says is superior to normal academic training. From 1980 to the mid-1990s, he wrote several books on symbolism, religious, and astrological subjects.

Carvalho has been writing on political issues since the early 1990s. He takes an extremely anti-communist stance and writes, for example, for the right-wing John Birch Society , whose conspiracy theories he shares.

Olavo de Carvalho is widowed and remarried with a total of eight children. He currently lives in Richmond , Virginia and works as an international correspondent for the Brazilian magazine "Diário do Comércio".

Philosophical work

Olavo de Carvalho sees himself as a Christian philosopher . The motto of his work can be used as "... a rebellion against the primacy of the collective over the individual consciousness." Are described. Accordingly, he distanced himself early on from the Brazilian academic and university establishment and repeatedly criticized it in his books ( e.g. O imbecil coletivo I and II , in free translation: The collective idiot I and II ).

His philosophical work is mainly based on the philosophy of Aristotle and scholasticism . His book "O Jardim das Aflições" ( The Garden of Afflictions ) was very controversial in Brazil. Carvalho distanced himself from what he believed to be the Marxist mainstream of modern Brazilian intellectuality and harshly criticized currents of thought such as liberation theology , “cultural” Marxism and deconstructivism .

further activities

Olavo de Carvalho was the editor of the first annotated edition of the entire work of the art and social critic Otto Maria Carpeaux and the Brazilian philosopher Mário Ferreira dos Santos . In addition, he published the first "History of the Brazilian Wehrmacht".

He is co-founder and president of the Inter-American Institute for Philosophy, Government and Social Thought , a think tank . He runs a weekly internet radio show (True Outspeak) in Portuguese, where he talks mostly about US and Brazilian politics.
