Mátrafüred is a resort in the Mátra , which is part of the city of Gyöngyös .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1301 as the village of Bene . Later the names Benepuszta and Beneváralja were also used.

Bene was spared the great plague epidemic in 1713. In the second half of the 19th century the place became desolate. With the rise of tourism, the place was repopulated in 1887 and renamed Mátrafüred in 1893. After the first hotels opened, the Gyöngyös - Parád road was expanded in 1908 . On June 5, 1923, the Mátra Railway between Gyöngyös and Mátrafüred began operating. In 1925 the track width was converted from 600 to 760 mm. On June 19, 1926, passenger traffic was also started.

In a vote on September 25, 2005, a majority of the population decided to break away from Gyöngyös. The Ministry of the Interior did not pass the initiative on to the President .
