Former girls' school, today Calau local history museum

The girls' school is a listed half-timbered house in Calau in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district in southern Brandenburg .

history

The building is in close proximity to the 13th century town church , but was not built until 1789. In the course of the industrial revolution , the city recorded an increase in population at the end of the 19th century with the emergence of the shoe industry. There was no longer enough space in the city school at Am Court 11 and 12 for the many children, so that from 1887 to 1908 one or two girls' classes were taught in the building. It was therefore popularly known as the old girls' school . The building then stood empty for several years until the archdeacon Otto Lützen took the initiative and in 1911 relocated his collection of local history exhibits from the little tower room of the town hall to the house. However, Lützen left Calau and the collection was orphaned. In 1927 the teacher Bernhard Menzel continued it and opened a local museum on May 25, 1935 on the occasion of the annual meeting of the Niederlausitz Society for History and Antiquity Research. During the Second World War , on April 19 and 20, 1945, the city was looted by the Red Army , and the museum was not spared either. Nevertheless, the house was able to reopen in 1961 on the initiative of the master potter Fritz Natusch with the help of Horst Senftleben . It has been the city's official museum of local history since 1963. In the 21st century it is looked after by volunteer local chronicles and friends of the local history museum. It has been part of the Witzerundweg since 2011 .

architecture

The building has a rectangular floor plan and was constructed in half-timbered construction. In the light yellow plastered ground floor there are four rectangular, brown lattice windows facing the street . The upper floor jumps out on the street side. The framework can still be seen throughout in this area. It is provided with a brown-covered gable roof .

exhibition

The museum shows typical finds from early history that were found during excavations, such as arrowheads and pottery shards. In addition, items from the guilds of the Calau craft are exhibited. This includes a shoemaker's corner that deals with the history of shoe manufacturing in Calau.
