The Calau Town Hall is located in the center of the old town of Calau , a small town in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district in southern Brandenburg .

location

The building is bounded to the north by Schlossstrasse , to the west by Platz des Friedens , to the east by Töpferstrasse and to the south by Kirchstrasse . To the north of the building there is a large open space that is used for events and celebrations. There is also one of the eight former pipe boxes with which the city was supplied with drinking water in the 14th and 15th centuries. Today it served as a fountain .

History and architecture

The monument , in the style of the neo-renaissance , was erected from 1869 to 1870 in place of a 200-year-old predecessor according to Seeling's plans . The building burned down in the Second World War , but was rebuilt in a simplified version between 1946 and 1948.

The two-storey , reddish brick building is structured with light cornices made of sandstone . The north facade opens to the open space and also serves as the main entrance to the building. A large portal can be reached via stone stairs. It leads to the higher ground floor, which is provided with three windows each with a slight arch. Next to the portal there are two more similarly designed windows. These are extended upwards through symmetrically arranged rectangular windows on the upper floor. There are two more dormers in the hipped roof , while a large curved panel with three significantly smaller windows is framed above the portal . A clock is attached above it - divided by another cornice.

Specialty

Mailbox for the joke mail

The city claims that the puns originated there. There is therefore a letterbox for the joke post on the right side of the entrance portal. The citizens of Calau are called upon to throw their puns there. These are printed in the city's official gazette.
