Fairy tale almanac for the year 1827

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fairy tale almanac for the year 1827 is a fairy tale collection by Wilhelm Hauff and other authors published by Franckh in Stuttgart in 1826 . The eight contributions, the most famous of which are The Dwarf Nose and Snow White and Rose Red , are linked by a frame narrative called The Sheik of Alessandria and His Slaves . The full title of the first edition is fairy tale almanac for the year 1827 for sons and daughters of the educated classes. Today, abridged versions are common, which are limited to Hauff's contributions.

It is the second of a total of three volumes: the predecessor and successor are the fairy tale almanacs for 1826 and 1828 .

The frame story is The Sheik of Alessandria and his slaves . Almansor, the son of Sheik Ali Banu, was abducted as a hostage to "Frankistan" ten years ago. Since Ali Banu was prophesied that Almansor would return on one of the anniversaries of the kidnapping, he holds a big festival every year on that day. On this occasion, he always releases some slaves who have been asked to tell a story or a fairy tale beforehand. After the first edition, the contributions are:

  • The dwarf nose
  • Abner, the Jew who didn't see anything
  • Poor Stephan
  • The baked head
  • The monkey as a human
  • The festival of the underground
  • Snow White and Rose Red
  • The history of Almansor

The last story brings the resolution, as the narrating slave reveals himself to be Almansor at the end. Four of the contributions are not from Hauff: These are the fairy tale Der Poor Stephan by Adolf Schöll , the grotesque The Baked Head by James Justinian Morier , the folk tale The Festival of the Underground and the fairy tale Snow White and Rose Red. The last two contributions were made by Wilhelm Grimm . These contributions can therefore not be found in the complete editions of Hauff's works and in the reprints of the Almanac based on them. Two of the stories are aimed not only at children, but also at adults: the baked head is characterized as an "uninterrupted series of comic scenes" in a conversation in the framework of the plot. A poor tailor and muezzin was mistakenly given a severed head instead of a dervish suit, which in his fear he slipped on someone else. This new “owner” does the same. This intrigue game is comparable to the story of the hand cut off from the first almanac . In the social satire The Ape as Man , a mysterious stranger uses drill and magic to make an orangutan appear as an educated Englishman, who he then introduces into the society of a small town. As in the two last-mentioned articles, Abner, the Jew who has not seen anything, lacks a child or youthful figure of identification or orientation, but it is an example and warning story that brings its message to the reader in an entertaining way albeit at the expense of the main character.

In snow-white and rose-red , a bear who spends the winter with a widow and her two daughters turns out to be an enchanted prince. The fairy tale The Dwarf Nose is about the son of a cobbler who, in an enchanted form, learns the craft of a master chef. It is Hauff's most frequently received contribution from the Almanac, which is reflected in numerous adaptations. Poor Stephan is about a poor cobbler boy who, with unearthly help, becomes a wealthy benefactor. The festival of the underground takes place in Norway. An improper pair of lovers comes into possession of a treasure through ghosts (the subterranean ones) and can marry.

background

The first volume, the fairy tale almanac for the year 1826 , was published by the renowned JB Metzler Verlag . Hauff had proposed a design as a high-quality gift ribbon with copper engravings. When the publisher did not respond, he switched to Franckh Verlag, which was only founded in 1822. He wrote about this in a letter to his brother Hermann from September 1826: “[...] that it was not the Frankh company or his miserable publishing houses that attracted me to him, but rather the pride of the smallest shopkeeper to publish and through me to become known yourself. "

filming

The monkey as a human served as a template for the DEFA fairy tale film Der Junge Engländer published in 1958 .
