Martyr of Pratulin
The Martyrs of Pratulin ( Polish : męczennicy podlascy ) were a group of thirteen believers of the Greek Catholic Church united with the Roman Catholic Church . They were shot dead by Russian troops of Tsar Alexander II in the village of Pratulin near Biała Podlaska on January 24, 1874 , and are venerated as martyrs in the Catholic Church .
The martyrs of Pratulin were farmers between the ages of 19 and 50. The Roman Catholic Church to which they belong was viewed as a threat by Russia, fearing that the Roman Catholic Church would oppose essential government goals, namely the Russification and exploitation of the population. In 1847 it was ordered that the Orthodox liturgy had to be celebrated in the churches of the Uniate that had not yet been destroyed.
The Pratulin martyrs refused to worship according to the liturgy of the Russian Orthodox Church and were shot praying in front of the Pratulin Church. 180 other parishioners were injured and about 80 were arrested.
The thirteen martyrs beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 6, 1996 were Anicet Hryciuk, Bartłomiej Osypiuk, Łukasz Bojko, Konstanty Bojko, Konstanty Łukaszuk, Onufry Wasyluk, Daniel Karmasz, Winczua Lewoniuk, Jan Andrzełjuk, Michzua Lewoniuk, Jan Andrzełjuk Maksym Hawryluk, Filip Geryluk and Ignacy Frańczuk.
The remains of the thirteen martyrs were transferred to the parish church of Pratulin in Ukraine on May 18, 1990. The feast day of the Pratulin Martyrs in the liturgy of the Catholic Church is January 24th .
