The monk cicada ( Penthimia nigra ) is a dwarf cicada from the subfamily of the monk cicadas (Penthimiinae).
features
The cicadas are 4–5.5 mm long. Their basic color varies from black to orange-brown. There are two larger orange spots on the pronotum, but they can also be missing. At the end of the abdomen, the fore wings overlap slightly. The eyes are auburn.
Occurrence
The monk cicada is found in the western Palearctic . It is represented in Central and Southern Europe. The species is absent on the British Isles and Scandinavia. To the east, it occurs as far as the Middle East .

Way of life
The cicadas can be found on various trees, especially on poplars ( Populus ) and oaks ( Quercus ). They suck on the leaves and stems of these trees. The adults of a generation usually fly from late April to early July. The hibernating nymphs appear in September and can sometimes be observed until the end of May in the following year.
