features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth ranges from 24 to 32 millimeters. In the animals, which are extraordinarily variable in color, the middle field of the forewings can show white, gray, black, light brown or rust-red tints. The species is very similar to the pointed-angle ligature ( Dysstroma citrata ). The species complex truncata - citrata as well as their color variability was already reported in detail and sometimes controversially in the 20th century . The following table lists the main distinguishing features:

truncata
citrata
truncata citrata

On the outer edge of the hind wings the name-giving moon spots can be seen Outer edge of the hind wings mostly without drawing
Line on the hind wings arched Line angled on the hind wings
Root field of the forewings often blurred Root field of the forewings usually sharply delimited
Post medial line protruding briefly without reaching the wavy line Post medial line very clear, pointed and protruding well
Fore wing shape relatively broad Fore wing shape relatively narrow
Caterpillar of the luncheon patches

Caterpillar, pupa

There are also differences in the caterpillars , which in truncata are pale yellow-green in color, taper towards the head and show a pointed dorsal valve, while in citrata they are predominantly light green and have a rather cylindrical shape with a blunt dew valve.

The doll is yellow-green in color, sometimes shows light brown wing sheaths and has a red-brown, pointed, slightly wrinkled cremaster , which is covered with a few hook bristles.

Synonyms

In addition to Chloroclysta truncata , other synonyms also include the following:

  • Larentia truncata
  • Cidaria truncata

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The species is distributed from Western Europe via Asia Minor, through Siberia, Mongolia, Sakhalin and Japan to North America, in Europe from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean area. It is absent on the large Mediterranean islands except Corsica and Iceland. In the Alps it rises to an altitude of around 2000 meters. The Moondchenflecken-Bindenspanner inhabits many different habitats, for example mixed forests, spruce mountain forests, heaths, moors and parks.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths fly in a first generation from May to July and a second generation in August and September. They visit artificial light sources as well as bait . The caterpillars can be found from June to July or overwintering from August to May of the following year. The leaves of:
