history

According to its own information, the company was founded on December 12, 1994; on February 13, 1995 the company was first entered in the commercial register at the Jena local court. On August 25, 1995, the company went public on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and in 1998 was admitted to the Neuer Markt . In the 1995 financial year when it went public, the company achieved sales of DM 275 million  . In the 1997 financial year, Mühl AG achieved sales of around DM 700 million with 1,015 employees. In the 1998 financial year, sales of DM 980 million were reported. At the beginning of 2000, the trading company H. Overesch & Co. KG with headquarters in Herne including 110 employees was taken over. For the year 2000 a turnover of more than 1.38 billion DM was achieved.

In 2001, sales fell for the first time since the IPO and a loss of around EUR 59 million was reported for the first nine months. At the end of 2001, the banks granted the company a deferred loan until the end of April 2002. In April 2002, insolvency proceedings were filed and the insolvency proceedings opened in early July 2002. At the time of filing for bankruptcy, Mühl AG had 1230 employees. The intention of the insolvency administrators was to keep 630 jobs and to qualify the remaining 600 for the labor market through employment companies .

In 2005 the public prosecutor's office in Mühlhausen investigated eleven former board members of Mühl AG for fraudulent bankruptcy. In 2010 the proceedings against former CEO Thomas Wolf were discontinued after a cash payment.

In November 2015, the company was reorganized as an investment company. In mid-2016, an insolvency plan for restructuring was presented, according to which Thomas Wolf committed to pay 500,000 euros into the bankruptcy estate. After the creditors' meeting approved the plan in December 2016, the insolvency proceedings were lifted in November 2017 and Mühl AG was able to continue its business activities. After the end of the insolvency proceedings, the company generated a balance sheet restructuring profit of around EUR 203 million. This resulted in tax obligations of around EUR 58 million, which, however, were waived by the Jena tax office, since otherwise the company would have become insolvent again.
