The Mühlenberg II tunnel was built in 1878/79 and is 341 meters long. It belongs to the Leinefelde – Treysa railway line opened in 1880 , which was part of the so-called “ Kanonenbahn ” and has been closed since 1998.
The tunnel lies between Effelder and Großbartloff in an S-curve. Both curve radii are 400 meters, separated by a 102 meter long intermediate straight with a continuous gradient of 1: 103. The mean altitude is 342 meters above sea level. NN. The tunnel is partly in red marl , but mostly in fissured, thin-plate limestones of the lower Muschelkalk, unfavorably close to the foot of the slope. In the heavily fissured mountains, there have already been repeated incursions into the terrain above the tunnel, which has an overburden of 30 to 40 meters . The steep slope is covered with mixed forest.
The structure is part of the railway line from Lengenfeld unterm Stein to Küllstedt , which today can be driven with handcarriages .
