The Mühlenradbrunnen is an action fountain in the Lichtenberg district of Berlin . He was from the metal sculptor Achim Kühn created and 1986 before a HO - department store in the new residential area Mühlengrund in Neu-Hohenschönhausen erected. Due to a lack of financial means for ongoing maintenance, servicing and maintenance, the well system was shut down at the end of the 1990s. Thanks to the commitment of the local population and the urging of the artist, it was possible to set in motion a renovation with funds from the Federal Urban Redevelopment East program, so that the facility was put back into operation on November 17, 2014.
description
At the edge of a stone fountain bowl, a slender metal mythical creature stretches up. Water is blown from his mouth onto three metal bowls arranged in a cascade. The water running from the last bowl drives a slowly rotating paddle wheel. The water then flows off in gentle turns on a stone stream. (The drainage channel has already been changed in such a way that the inlet to the nearby club restaurant has been eliminated.) Viewed from the side, the snake-like figure with the bowls and the wheel looks like a bizarre person pushing a wheelbarrow in front of him. The water for the Mühlenradbrunnen, which owes its name and the design idea to the place on the Mühlengrund, came from a nearby spring, was pumped from the main basin into the mythical creature and then fed back into the stream via the stone channel. The entire fountain is accessible and intended as an adventure playground .
State in the 21st century
When the well system was shut down in the late 1990s, parts of the system became dilapidated. For a long time, the Lichtenberg district office was unable to provide funds from the current budget for redevelopment; Investments with subsidies require a long-term planning and approval process and therefore did not seem possible. A planned tender for the general repair of the well in 2010 apparently did not take place or remained unsuccessful. Conflicts arose due to the different planning perspectives between the artist, who did not want to change the appearance of the fountain and also did not want to have it demolished, and the Lichtenberg district office, which considered a simplification or a partial demolition possible in order to allocate the investment and renovation costs of the existing parts reduce. These could be settled through mutual concessions. The first work in the area around the town square, such as the redesign of the small pavement and the green spaces, took place in 2012. In November 2012 there was a second meeting between Kühn and representatives of the district office with the aim of starting the well again with minor changes. Around 400,000 euros are required for this, which should come from the federal urban redevelopment program , if possible. There was an agreement by the end of December 2013 - the necessary funds were provided by the 2014 district budget and funds from the urban redevelopment program, a total of around 460,000 euros . This made it possible to completely renew the pump technology, the external decorative elements and the concrete surrounds of the fountain. The well system was expected to be put back into operation by 2015. However, everyone involved finished more quickly. Finally, on November 17, 2014, a ceremonial rededication of the mill wheel fountain was carried out.
In autumn 2015, however, it turned out that sealing joints had to be reworked in several places. The district office had a corresponding repair carried out, which was completed on April 20, 2016, the well was switched on. Since the fountain was on site as a mill wheel on Mühlengrund for exactly 30 years this year , the district center held a festival on May 20, 2016.
