As Mülheim God costume is Corpus Christi procession in Mülheim am Rhein called. “Divine costume” means the wearing of God, namely Jesus Christ in the sacrament . It is a peculiarity that this procession is not only carried out on land, but also by ships on the Rhine.

history

Exact details about the origins of the festival are not known. It is assumed that the beginning of the Corpus Christi festival in Mülheim with the so-called Mülheimer divine costume is in the first half of the 14th century. Even from the earliest times, there is only sparse information about the ways and where the processions took place. Are known:

  1. From the 16th century there is a note in a document: “ ... the path that leads to the Dunwalt, since the Holy Sacrament of Mulheim is usually carried there. “ By this we mean thin forest , where the Premonstratensian women from Steinfeld Monastery had a branch.
  2. In a directory of the Altenberg estates from 1769 there is the following entry in connection with the Mülheimer god costume : “ The annual procession goes from the Schönrader forest via Paffrather Straaß, the upper Steinweg and thus in a circle around the whole Weidenbruch to Bochheim. “The Schönrather Forest and the Schönrather Hof belonged to the Altenberg Abbey . From here the procession went to Buchheim .
  3. Ultimately, there are records of where shooting was allowed: ... on the Creuz aufm Weeg to Stammheim , near Schönrath, on the Schanzgesweg near Creuz, in Bocheim, on the Rhine ...

Then one could describe the path of the divine costume as follows: In the morning at half past six move out of the Clemenskirche to the banks of the Rhine, where the blessing was given. We continued up the Rhine to Stammheim to Hochkreuz, then via Schönrath to the vicinity of the Dünnwald monastery and back via Schänzchesweg (today Schanzenstraße) to Buchheim. Now we went to the Rhine at the Pulverturm (today Am Pulverturm), where a ship was ready for a Rhine trip with blessings. At the end the procession went back over the stone gate (today Mülheimer Freiheit) to the old hospital. Finally, a so-called controversial sermon took place here, after which the procession returned to Clemenskirche.
