Other names RV Tauri

RV Tauri is a star just under 5000  light years away . It is the prototype of the RV Tauri stars , which belong to the pulsation-variable stars .

RV Tauri was discovered as a variable star in 1905 by Lidiya Tseraskaya, and in 1908 the regularity was confirmed. During a period of 78.5 days, the star shows 2 maxima with a magnitude of about 9.5 and 2 minima at 10.0 and 10.5, respectively. These strong fluctuations also ensure that the star would be assigned to a different spectral class depending on the situation - it fluctuates between G2 and M2.

RV Tauri is surrounded by a disk of dust and this has already been interpreted as a sign of a companion, which, however, has not yet been discovered. RV-Tauri is interpreted as a Post-AGB-Star , which in the further development will contract to a white dwarf , surrounded by a planetary nebula .
