The waste-to-energy plant (MHKW) Bremen was built in 1969 in the In den Hufen part of the Findorff district of Bremen . It is used to dispose of waste with a low calorific value , such as household waste . The MHKW produces district heating of around 200,000 MWh and more than 270,000 MWh of base load electricity per year. Up to 550,000 tons of waste can be incinerated annually for this purpose .

history

The decision to build was made at the time because the amount of garbage per capita in Bremen had doubled and other types of disposal such as landfill or recycling were only possible to a limited extent in the smallest federal state. The incineration of waste from the surrounding area was also planned for economic utilization. When choosing the location, the proximity to the federal motorway 27 was decisive, so that the garbage trucks do not unnecessarily burden city traffic. In 2004 the total electrical output was increased to 15.3 megawatts . The MHKW is operated by swb Disposal GmbH & Co. KG . On January 1, 2008, the previous Abfallverarbeitung Nord GmbH (ANO) was fully integrated into the swb group. In the course of the integration, on August 1st, 2008, the waste treatment north GmbH became the swb waste disposal GmbH & Co. KG. The entire University of Bremen and other buildings in the technology park are supplied with district heating from the nearby MHKW.

A significant increase in efficiency has been prepared since mid-2009. On June 28, 2010, the swb supervisory board decided in an extraordinary meeting on a comprehensive modernization of the power plant, the costs of which are in the high double-digit million range. With this measure, the electricity and district heating production was significantly higher - at constant CO 2 - emissions . Since the completion of the work in May 2013, the power plant has been producing electricity with a total output of 50 megawatts - more than three times as much as before.

functionality

Household waste, commercial waste and dried sewage sludge serve as fuel . Around 534,000 tons of waste were incinerated in 2017. The thermal energy content of this waste was 1,620,716 MWh, the electrical power generation amounted to 301,550 MWh. 42,000 MWh of the electricity were used by the company itself. District heating of 208,000 MWh was delivered. Additional heating oil of around 9,061 MWh had to be used during operation. After the waste is incinerated, more than 150,000 tonnes are left as residues. In addition, swb also operates the Bremen medium-caloric power plant with a similar functional principle.
