The Münsterberg Tower ( Wieża Ziębicka in Polish ) in Neisse ( Nysa in Polish ) is one of the two preserved towers in the medieval city walls of the city of Neisse. The name is derived from the city of Münsterberg , which is around 40 kilometers northwest of Nysa.

history

The Münsterberg Tower was built at the same time as the city walls in the middle of the 14th century under the Wroclaw Bishop Preczlaw von Pogarell , the sovereign of the principality of Neisse and vassal of the Bohemian King John of Luxembourg .

The fortifications of the city of Neisse originally comprised four towers and 28 bastions . They were torn down in the 19th and early 20th centuries, only two towers and a fragment of the city walls at the Bishop's Palace remained. An outer wall was once built, as reported in a message about the kennel between the defensive walls from 1414. Today, in place of the fortifications, green spaces were created around the old town; the two preserved towers are in the middle of the new buildings.

The Münsterberg tower was built from brick around 1350 . In addition to the ordinary bricks, dark red clay bricks were also used, the masonry was decorated with them. Holes are visible in the masonry that were used to attach scaffolding. The highest, withdrawn floor is crowned with a decorative crenellated wreath . The parapet of the underlying terrace with loopholes broken. Some of the windows are pointed arch , the others are rectangular.

The building was partially rebuilt and extended in the 16th and 17th centuries and renovated in the 19th century. Today it is accessible to visitors as a 42 m high viewing platform.

In the past, the entrance was only possible at the level of the second floor. The ground-level door on the northwest side was later broken. Since 1922 there has been a lion figure above it, which dates from the second half of the 16th century.

The tower was entered on September 12, 1955 under 171/55 in the register of architectural monuments of the Opole Voivodeship.
