The M541 (as a substitute for the prototype) was a two-stroke internal combustion engine developed and manufactured by VEB Fahrzeug- und Jagdwaffenwerk "Ernst Thälmann" (Simson) . It replaced the engines of the M53 / M54 series. The M541 was used in Simson's mopeds from the end of 1979; first in the Schwalbe , then additionally in the S51 and other series. In 1983, a 70 cm³ variant, based on the M541, called the M741, was added.

The designation M541 is often used as a collective term for the engine series M541 , M531 , M542 , M532 as well as M741 and M742 , as this was the most built. All engines are based on the same model. The different variants differ only minimally.

History and meaning

With the M54 / M53 series, Simson had already produced an engine type that was completely planned and developed in-house. The new M541 series was also developed and produced by Simson. Some basic design features were taken over from the predecessor, but the individual assemblies were redesigned. This engine was designed so that some details could be modified (see the section on types ).

The construction was well thought out and efficient, so that today it is often used as the basis for tuning superstructures. Commercial dealers offer the M541 with increased displacement and other modifications with an output of up to 23  hp . Since 2009 the engine has been completely re-produced by MZA Meyer-Zweiradtechnik Ahnatal GmbH.

Explanation of the designation

Simson always referred to its small motorcycle engines of this series according to the following principle (here using the M541 as an example):

  • M - for Simson Motor
  • 5 - nominal displacement in 10 cm³
  • 4 - number of gears in the transmission
  • 1 - version (number to differentiate between series); 2 followed with the introduction of 12V electrics in 1989, 3 and 4 were used for models after 1990
  • / X or –XX digit (s) to indicate further specifications

This was followed by letters describing the add-on parts. There were:

  • K or E - kick starter or electric starter
  • F or H - foot switch or manual switch; L for variant for garden tool system Progress E930
  • R - scooter variant, i.e. modified footshift lever and adapted wiring harness routing of the ignition (for Schwalbe and SR50 / SR80 )

From version 3 , the type designation was attached to the engine in the form of a label attached.

Technical specifications

In all variants, the crankcase and the gearbox consist of a cast block. The primary drive is helical , all other gear pairs have straight teeth. The gear is implemented as a draw-wedge circuit. The housing and the cylinder are die-cast from AlSi9Cu1 , the liner is made of gray cast iron and is shrunk into the cylinder. The petrol-oil mixture took over the lubrication of the bearings due to the shaft sealing rings that were now located outside the crankshaft bearings, which required a 100 ml reduction in the transmission oil capacity compared to the previous engines.

The standard S 50 was known for the fact that, despite the maximum speed of 60 km / h, it often “recorded” up to 70 km / h on flat roads, even when driving with a passenger. (Since a speedometer should not show too little, the actual speed reached was a little below 70 km / h, but still well above the permissible maximum speed.) On the other hand, this model found it difficult, especially on inclines. With the long-stroke concept of the new engine, you achieved noticeably more pulling power in the middle speed range and a reduction in fuel consumption of around 11%. With the new engine design, Simson also intended a somewhat greater drop in performance above the speed of 60 km / h in the highest gear (approx. 6800 / min).

The planned useful life of the new engine increased to 40,000 km.

Compared to the M52 / 53/54 series with dog clutch, the new generation of engines had a draw-wedge clutch . With this, the number of gears (three or four) could be varied with little effort.

The kickstarter shaft, which was often bent in the event of a fall (which could then result in oil leakage), could only be changed in the previous engines by a very laborious process of dismantling the engine / transmission block. With the new motor, it was even possible to change the shaft in the motor / gear block built into the frame. While a gear segment meshed with a gear on the output shaft when the previous engine was started, the torque of the kick starter was transferred with a freewheel in the new engine. This prevented the kick starter from jamming due to tooth-on-tooth positions.

As with the S-50 engines, the cylinders of the new series could be ground up to six times in 0.25 mm increments and paired with a matching, new piston for further use.

Note: The data comes from original repair instructions and spare parts catalogs. All variants are listed that were manufactured up to and including 1990 ( GDR production). Little is known about some of them, however, especially the variants for two-wheelers for export (Simson exported to numerous Eastern European countries, as well as to Great Britain and others). This list does not include the variants that were produced by FAJAS ' successor companies .
