MAY Carbon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MAI Carbon is one of five top clusters recommended by an independent jury on January 19, 2012 in the third round of the top cluster competition for funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Each of the selected top clusters is funded by the federal government over a period of up to five years with up to 40 million euros and must be counter-financed in equal parts by the project partners.

MAI Carbon is an initiative of Carbon Composites  eV (CCeV) based in Augsburg .

Background and purpose

The cluster in the city triangle of Munich, Augsburg and Ingolstadt pursues the goal of making carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) technologically capable of large-scale production by 2020. In order to achieve this goal, leap innovations are required along the entire component life cycle, i.e. H. Starting with fiber and matrix material, through the manufacture of components and product systems, right through to conclusive recycling concepts.

In the cluster, the partners bundle their knowledge in order to expand their technological leadership in the use of CFRP components in mass production and to make Germany a global pioneer in the field of fiber composite technology. The intensive cooperation between well-known major German companies and technology leaders in the application sectors of automotive engineering , aerospace technology , mechanical and plant engineering as well as fiber and semi-finished product manufacturers make the MAI Carbon top cluster unique.

The declared aim of the cluster is to bring carbon fiber-reinforced plastics to series production and thus to develop the MAI region into a European competence center for CFRP lightweight construction. The aim is to cover the entire value chain of CFRP technology and help the partners represented in the cluster to achieve a top position on the world market.

Companies, educational and research institutions as well as other organizations from the Munich-Augsburg-Ingolstadt region have joined forces in the cluster.

The founding members include Audi , BMW , Premium Aerotec , Airbus Helicopters (formerly Eurocopter), Voith and the SGL Group , as well as the IHK Schwaben and the Chair for Carbon Composites (LCC) at the Technical University of Munich .

Success stories

exhibition

The special exhibition "Hard stuff: Carbon - the material of the future" organized by MAI Carbon and its partners was presented from May 2014 to November 2016 at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, after an extension in its branch at the Deutsches Museum Bonn and as a co-exhibitor in the Textile and Industry Museum Augsburg (TIM) the material carbon from its creation to today's processing. In the Deutsches Museum in Munich, in the Center for New Technologies on 300 m², the methods used to process carbon fibers and in which areas carbon is already used were shown. A look into the future presented objects in which the material can be used in the future. In the TIM Augsburg even 1,000 m² was available. In total, over 300,000 visitors of all ages as well as from German-speaking countries and abroad have already been reached.

Together with the special exhibition, a permanent facility was opened in the children's area of the Deutsches Museum in Munich, with which the youngest visitors can familiarize themselves with the material.

ECCM

The 17th European Conference on Composite Materials (ECCM17) took place from June 26th to 30th, 2016 in the International Congress Center Munich (ICM). Europe's largest specialist conference on composites was organized by the Chair of Carbon Composites (LCC) at the Technical University of Munich together with the leading-edge cluster MAI Carbon.

Over 1300 guests attended the nearly 900 lectures over four conference days. There was an accompanying exhibition, many company visits and numerous other side events. The accompanying program offered numerous day trips to tourist attractions around Munich for relatives who had traveled with them. The ECCM17 was a complete success and the feedback was consistently positive.

For the top cluster MAI Carbon, the ECCM17 was one of the highlights of its almost five years of work with and for the material carbon, with the aim of introducing it into series production.

Carbon Connected

"Carbon Connected" is the name of the online portal that enables the partners of the MAI Carbon leading-edge cluster as part of the MAI 2.0 project to use the digitally protected project space for collaboration. Interested parties and experts on the subject of “fiber composites” meet here to exchange information with selected cooperation partners.

Gold label

The top cluster MAI Carbon received the gold label for excellent cluster management in cooperation with its sponsoring association Carbon Composites eV in 2013, and in 2015 the quality label was recertified. Incidentally, MAI Carbon received this award as the first leading-edge cluster in the third round of the competition.

Day of the Talents

Another public recognition of the basic work that has been done is that the cluster management was twice involved in the “ Tag der Talente ” event in Berlin. This event for young talent is aimed at winners of a wide variety of school and youth competitions and is organized annually by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

MAY Night

Mai Carbon developed the MAI Night event format to promote SMEs. In the process, a carefully selected group of selected decision-makers and personalities get to know individual SMEs and their cooperation and project potentials better. The presented company itself acts as the host if possible. The event always includes the presentation of a selected MAI project in which the respective SME was or is involved, as well as a cozy “get together” with the opportunity for personal exchange.

International partners

The cluster and the Australian initiative Victorian Center of Advanced Materials Manufacturing (VCAMM) from Melbourne signed a declaration at the JEC Composite Show in Singapore in 2013, stating their intention to work together in the field of promoting carbon fiber composites.

As part of the MAI iBIC (International Bridges for Innovation in Carbon Composites) project, two regions have emerged with which MAI Carbon will work together in the future to initiate international intercluster collaborations. These are the USA with the IACMI (Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation) and South Korea with Carbon Valley.

MAY Carbon Partner

Whether small, medium-sized or large company, manufacturing company or service provider, university or professorship: Companies and research institutions from the Munich, Augsburg, Ingolstadt region that are active in the field of carbon fiber reinforced plastics and contribute to the development of this region into a leading European center for fiber composite technologies as a MAI Carbon Partner, can make their contribution to the success of the region and the technology.
