MAPP gas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MAPP gas (from English m ethyl a cetylene- p ropadiene p ropane ) is a mixture of a plurality of liquefied gases , which mainly of propyne (methylacetylene), propadiene (allene), and propane is. MAPP gas is used as a fuel gas for welding or soldering, with 2927 ° C almost the same as acetylene (3160 ° C). It is more efficient than the other liquefied gases and requires a much smaller volume than acetylene because it is not under pressure. MAPP gas has advantages in particular for underwater welding and gas soldering .

One bottle of MAPP gas (21 kg) replaces 3 to 4 bottles of acetylene or 160 to 200 kg of calcium carbide .

Typical composition:

  • 38.4% propyne
  • 34.9% propadiene
  • 22.7% other hydrocarbons

MAPP gas was originally a brand name of Dow Chemical .
