MBTH procedure

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The MBTH method is a measuring method for determining short-chain aliphatic aldehydes . The discontinuous method is used to measure emissions .

Structure, procedure and use

For the total determination of short-chain aliphatic aldehydes ( formaldehyde , acetaldehyde and propionaldehyde ), a partial flow of the laden exhaust gas is passed through two washing bottles connected in series , the second bottle being used to check the completeness of the aldehyde absorption. The aldehydes are brought into reaction with a hydrochloride of 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinonhydrazone (MBTH). In the subsequent reaction with iron chloride , a tetraazapentamethine cyanine cation is formed in two oxidation steps , which can be measured photometrically .

In the ring test the MBTH method and provided with dinitrophenylhydrazine working DNPH method equivalent results. Compared to the DNPH process, the MBTH process is not selective with regard to formaldehyde.

Due to interference, the MBTH method is no longer to be used if the concentration of sulfur dioxide is more than 30 mg / m 3 . Otherwise the results would be considerably lower.

The MBTH procedure was standardized with the VDI guideline VDI 3862 Part 1 . It is used, among other things, to measure emissions in woodworking and processing.
