The HzL V 81 is a four-axle diesel locomotive with rod drive , which was designed for heavy shunting and medium-sized mainline service. It was built in 1957 by the company Maschinenfabrik Esslingen (ME) and was given the designation HzL V 81 by the Hohenzollerische Landesbahn . Today it has not been able to drive in the Horb Railway Adventure World . Internally, the locomotive is also referred to as the Alb type.

development

When in 1956 the Hohenzollerische Landesbahn wanted to switch from steam to diesel traction, four locomotive factories applied to manufacture locomotives. One of them was Maschinenfabrik Esslingen (ME), which sent a three-axle locomotive for test drives that was intended for the state railway in Israel . A locomotive was then ordered from the ME. The locomotive from Esslingen was ordered with the argument "that the money should stay in the country". No other locomotives of this design were produced, and the V 81 remained a one-off from 1957 to 1996.

technology

The locomotive has diagonally offset cabs.

A Mercedes-Benz MB 820 Bb diesel engine with an output of 950 hp was used as the drive motor . The engine was designed as a fast runner . The power is transmitted via a fluid transmission from Voith . Technically, the locomotive was designed as a rod locomotive . Originally it was equipped with steam heating , which was later removed.

commitment

At the beginning, the locomotive was used in front of workers' trains to Hechingen and Burladingen . Later it was used in freight train service and for various other tasks.

With the more maintenance-intensive rod drive and as a single piece, the locomotive was in operation at HzL for 40 years. In 1999 it was not available. In 2012 it was handed over to the Horb Railway Adventure World as a non-drivable exhibit with several other HzL vehicles .
