history
After reunification in 1990, the energy combines of the former GDR were converted into private stock companies and GmbHs. Mitteldeutsche Energieversorgung AG (MEAG) and Westsächsische Energieversorgung AG (WESAG) were established in Halle and Leipzig, from which the gas divisions were spun off shortly afterwards and founded as Gasversorgung Sachsen-Anhalt GmbH (GSA) and Gasversorgung Leipzig GmbH (GVL). In 1994, GVL was renamed Erdgas West-Sachsen GmbH (EWS). For years EWS and GSA were represented by a joint management team and also cooperated in the expansion of the natural gas network, the conversion from town gas to natural gas and in the supply and support of their customers. On July 10, 2000, the two sister companies finally merged to form MITGAS Mitteldeutsche Gasversorgung GmbH. With the amendment of the Energy Industry Act in 2005 and the required separation of network and sales, MITGAS founded its distribution network operator on January 1, 2007. The 100 percent subsidiary Mitteldeutsche Netzgesellschaft Gas mbH (MITNETZ GAS, until December 31, 2011 MITGAS distribution network GmbH) was created.
