NGC 2770 is a Sc-type spiral galaxy located in the constellation Lynx , which is an estimated 85 million light years from the Milky Way . West of NGC 2770 is the galaxy pair NGC 2770A (LEDA 82318, MCG + 06-20-036) with a visual magnitude of 15.2 mag.
The object was discovered on March 17, 1790 by the astronomer William Herschel with a 48 cm telescope.
On January 9, 2008, satellite Swift in NGC 2770 by chance (he was just observing the remnants of the supernova SN 2007uy , which was discovered in the galaxy by Yoji Hirose on December 31, 2007) the newly emerging supernova explosion SN 2008D . He recorded a five-minute burst of X-rays with a total energy of 10 39 joules, which corresponds to about a hundred thousandth of the explosion energy of a supernova. This discovery made it possible to observe the development of the supernova and to check the supernova theories. Supernova SN 1999eh was also observed in NGC 2770.
