history

As part of the north reinforcement , it was decided at the end of 1941 to build the battery, which was built by the summer of 1942. The location was west of Vardø and north of Kiberg .

The command bunker was built over with an optical range finder. The task of the fortification was to defend the entrance to the Varangerfjord . For this it was equipped with the largest guns used in Finnmark .

She was with three 28-cm SK L / 45 - coastal guns loaded, which had a range of about 34,000 meters. These guns are said to come from the battleships Scharnhorst , Gneisenau and Moltke . There were also numerous anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns .

The position belonged to the artillery group Vadsö of the artillery commander Kirkenes and was under the naval artillery department 513.

The position was blown up in October 1944 by its own crew in connection with the advance of the Red Army as part of the evacuation of Finnmark.

Current condition

Today, the remains of other buildings as well as bunkers and the gun emplacements can be found on site. Among them is the command bunker, a standard type M 178 building , which is essentially in the same condition as it was abandoned by its crew in 1944. The site was added to the list of Norwegian cultural assets in 2015.
