Vardø fyr on the Norwegian island of Hornøya near Vardø in Fylke Troms og Finnmark is the easternmost beacon in the country.
history
The first beacon on Hornøya was erected in 1896. The lighthouse to the north of the first lighthouse was rebuilt in 1937 and repaired in 1947 after the Second World War .
In 1959 all buildings were rebuilt. The new tower consists of a square- angled iron construction with Eternit cladding, an unusual construction method for a land-based object.
Next to the tower with the machine house there is the house for the lighthouse keeper and another outbuilding.
The lighthouse is located in a nature reserve, in which remains of the German fortifications from the Second World War are.
In 1987 the beacon was switched to automatic operation, and the tower has not been manned since 1991. In 1998 the lighthouse was added to the Norwegian Heritage List.
Lighthouse in art
The picture painted by Peder Balke in 1855 with the title Fyr på den norske kyst is better known under the name «Vardø fyr». However, the picture shows neither the former nor the current lighthouse.
