On January 17, 2017, Governor Erwin Pröll announced his retirement from politics. On January 18, 2017, the previous Finance Minister and Deputy Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner was proposed as a candidate for the party chairmanship by the board of the Lower Austria People's Party , and at the party conference on March 25, 2017 she was elected as the state party chairwoman.
On February 23, 2017, the People's Party of Lower Austria presented its future government team and introduced Stephan Pernkopf as the future deputy of the governor and Ludwig Schleritzko as the future financial councilor. Pernkopf should keep his previous agendas environment, agriculture and energy, and the state clinics should be added . In addition to the finance department, Schleritzko will also be responsible for the Lower Austrian Health and Social Fund (NÖGUS) and road construction. In an extraordinary session of the state parliament on April 19, 2017, Mikl-Leitner was elected governor and sworn in with 52 out of 56 votes. On September 21, 2017, Franz Schnabl was elected in the state parliament to succeed Maurice Androsch as regional councilor for health, social administration and asylum.
