After two years in the rayon service, he switched to teaching in the school department. There he aspired to the course to become a senior officer ("police officer"), which he completed in 1984/1985. In 1986 he was entrusted with the management of the Adjutantur of the General Inspectorate by the then General Inspector Günther Bögl . In 1993 Schnabl was promoted to Head of Section I of the General Inspectorate, and in 1995 he was appointed Brigadier. In the same year he took part in a UN police operation as part of the Petersberg tasks in Bosnia .
On February 1, 1999, he was appointed to succeed Johann Schererbauer as the youngest general inspector of the security guard. In the course of the Vienna police reform , Schnabl, who had personally picked up his daughter from a Thursday demonstration against the black-blue government, was recalled by Interior Minister Strasser. His successor was Ernst Holzinger, Colonel of the Gendarmerie from Upper Austria . Schnabl was to become the commander of the Margareten security guard department, responsible for the Viennese districts of Wieden , Margareten and Mariahilf . He appealed against his replacement, but then took up a position as head of security at the Canadian-Austrian automotive supplier Magna International Europe and took five years' leave. His appeal was thus invalid, and after a further six months he had lost his entitlement to his old position under the Civil Service Service Act . At Magna International Europe he was promoted to the board area as Vice President Human Resources, but resigned from this position in 2017.

In May 2019 it was announced that Schnabl had received generous gifts from the German ex-spy and detective Werner Mauss in the years 2008-2012 (at that time as a manager at Magna) for arranging contacts, for example to the Viennese lawyer Gabriel Lansky and the then general director for public safety . So he and his wife were invited to a weekend stay in Corsica , received a damask knife worth 6,000 to 8,000 euros and was invited twice by the detective to hunt home. ÖVP, FPÖ and Neos called on Schnabl to "obviously morally question them Actions "and demanded that the allegations of corruption be clarified, Schnabl himself spoke of an intrigue.
