Hornøya is an island in the municipality of Vardø in Fylke Troms og Finnmark . It is Norway's easternmost island and is a good kilometer from Vardø in the Barents Sea . At the highest point on the island (60 moh .) Is the Vardø lighthouse . Since its automation in 1991, the island has been uninhabited, apart from a few biologists from Tromsø University , who do research on the island in the summer and live in the lighthouse keeper's house.

The island consists of sandstone and slate and measures about 900 meters in north-south and 650 meters in west-east. It has a steep slope on the west side, while the east slope slopes more gently towards the sea and finally flows into the Store Avløysinga peninsula. The Holm Lille Avløysinga is located south of Hornøya. On the west side, between Hornøya and the neighboring island Reinøya, is the small island of Prestholmen.

One of Norway's largest seabird colonies lives on Hornøya. On the steep cliff side nest more than 40,000 pairs of birds of the species Razorbill , Guillemot , kittiwake , puffin , thick-billed murre , cormorants , guillemots and shags . Furthermore nest on the island (and Reinøya) a large number of herring gulls and black-backed gulls . Other bird species are the ruff , the white wagtail and the common raven . The thick-billed mummies in particular attract bird enthusiasts from far away. The island has been under the protection of the Hornøya og Reinøya nature reserve since 1983.
