Fruholmen fyr is the northernmost lighthouse in the world. It is located on the Fruholmen archipelago northwest of the island of Ingøy , in the Norwegian municipality of Måsøy in Troms og Finnmark .

history

Since the 1850s, coasters expressed the desire for a lighthouse on Fruholmen to secure the important trade route to Arkhangelsk for the pomor trade . In 1863 the Stortinget finally approved the construction.

The original lighthouse was built from cast iron between 1864 and 1866 and was first used on August 25, 1866. The tower was 33 meters high. First the beacon was operated with fatty oil, then from around 1875 with paraffin . The lighthouse received a telephone connection in 1931. Fruholmen fyr was the only lighthouse in Finnmark that was not occupied by the Germans during the German occupation in World War II . In November 1944, the family that operated it at the time was forced to evacuate the lighthouse, the lighthouse was bombed and razed to the ground.

A new reinforced concrete lighthouse was built after the war. This was put into operation in 1949. The new beacon was powered by electricity from diesel generators. In 1963 a power cable was laid from the island of Ingøy to the lighthouse, and a year later a radio beacon was installed. In 1973 the family business of the tower was wound up and a change of business with two employees on duty was set up. In 2006 the lighthouse was automated and has been unmanned ever since.
