The M 176 , M 177 and M 178 are prototypes of an engine series from the Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Mercedes-AMG , which were introduced in the Mercedes-AMG C 63 ( M 177 ) at the beginning of February 2015 and in the Mercedes-AMG GT ( M 178 ) at the beginning of March 2015 . The variant ( M 176 ) installed in the Mercedes-Benz G 500 was launched in June 2015. These are turbocharged gasoline engines with eight cylinders in a V arrangement and a 90 ° cylinder bank angle.

The M 177 and M 178 variants are assembled according to the "one man, one engine" principle in the engine factory at Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach , the M 176 in the engine plant in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim .

Base engine

The V8 engines are derived from the four-cylinder in - line engines of the M 133 series  . Two cylinder blocks are combined with the crankcase. The cylinder dimensions were retained, the displacement is therefore 3982 cm³ (2 x 1991 cm³) with a bore of 83 mm and a stroke of 92 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 90 mm. The compression ratio is 10.5. For weight and friction reduction are aluminum - forged pistons used, and instead of conventional cylinder liners, the cylinder liners of the aluminum crankcase have an extremely hard and wear resistant, only about 0.1 to 0.15 mm thick coating of iron and carbon. This is applied by arc spraying and then honed to an almost mirror- like finish . Friction and wear can be halved with this NANOSLIDE® technology.

The four overhead, adjustable camshafts are driven by a timing chain and operate 4 valves per cylinder via roller rocker arms. The coolant pump is also driven via the timing chain. With a delivery rate of up to 420 l / min, it ensures heat regulation together with the three-stage thermostat.

The M 176 and the variants of the M 177 used in the E 63 have had cylinder deactivation in the partial load range (900 / min – 3250 / min (M 176) or 1000 / min – 3250 / min (M 177)) since 2017. Cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8 are shut down in that the inlet and outlet valves are no longer opened via a zero-lift cam. At the same time, the fuel supply and ignition of these cylinders are deactivated. The cylinder deactivation is only active in the Economy and Comfort drive programs .

Charging and exhaust

The two exhaust gas turbochargers generate a maximum of 1.2 bar boost pressure and are mounted close to the outlets between the cylinder heads for good response. In addition, the heat dissipation from the engine compartment is improved and the unit is narrower. The gas exchange takes place for the first time in a Mercedes-Benz engine from the outside into the inside of the "V".

Two charge air coolers integrated in a separate coolant circuit lower the temperature of the compressed charge air to values ​​that are a maximum of 25 ° C above that of the ambient air.

All variants meet the EU6 emissions standard. The M 176 has had a particle filter in the exhaust system on the underbody of the vehicle as standard since 2017 .
