M - Menschenmachen Medien (short name M ) is a media policy magazine published in Germany by the ver.di union .

The magazine is aimed at permanent and freelance journalists, journalists in training, employees in radio and television companies, in film and cinema companies, publishers and agencies as well as in film productions and film technology companies.

Karin Wenk is the responsible editor.

history

The magazine has been published since January 1994 under the title "M - Menschenmachen Medien". It had two previous editions. For the journalists organized in the German Union of Journalists (dju), IG Druck und Papier published the monthly magazine “die feder” from 1952 to 1989, which appeared in lower case for years . After the union merged with the art union to form IG Medien - Printing and Paper, Journalism and Art , it was renamed "Journalistik & Kunst". Both editions were published at the headquarters of the union in Stuttgart.

Since the founding of the United Service Union (ver.di), in which the IG Medien was absorbed in 2001, the ver.di federal executive board and department 8 (media, art and industry) have published the magazine. Other publications from the Media, Art and Industry department are “DRUCK + PAPIER” and “Kunst + Kultur”.

Frequency of publication

M appeared for many years as a monthly magazine, two to three times a year with double editions. M has been available as an online publication since January 2016 and is updated regularly. In addition, M appears four times a year with a thematic printed issue. The print magazine received a new layout in 2016 and is still being printed in A4 format with a print run of 50,000 copies in Darmstadt. The print version is only available by subscription. The editorial office has been based in the United Service Union since the founding of the Berlin Service Union. The magazine has been published on the Internet since 1996, initially with individual articles and a table of contents. All reports have been online since 1999. With the publication of the first print magazine in 2016, the key texts from the respective issue will be available for reading on the M Online website via “Blendle”. Some articles, such as the current comment, can also be read online free of charge.

M is represented in the electronic magazine library and is held in other university libraries such as that of the Saarland University .

content

Both online and as a print edition, the magazine deals with journalistic and media-creating self-image, German and international media policy, collective bargaining policy and press law , copyright , freedom of the press at home and abroad as well as developments in the media industry and other topics.

So far, each issue has also had a main topic, which has been called the "title topic" and which illuminates this with reports on several pages. Topics included online journalism (issue 01–02 / 2003), new media (02–03 / 2004), women in the media (03/2005), citizen journalism (09/2006), working on the news desk (12/2007) , Blogs (04/2008) or self-employment (10/2008). The main topic is regularly the dju's “Journalists Day”, which has been held annually since 1986. The Journalists Day has been documented on M Online with reports and videos since 2016.

Every M Print magazine deals with a main topic, which sometimes takes up more than half of the magazine. Under the heading “The Financing Gap”, the first issue of 2016 examines journalism financing. Fixed categories are the commentary on page 5 and the portrait on page 4. It introduces people with various professions in the media industry.
