Life

academic career

Małgorzata Manowska studied until 1992 at the University of Warsaw Law . She completed her studies with a master's degree and also obtained her doctorate in civil procedure law from the University of Warsaw in 2001. In 2010 the habilitation followed at the same university. She was initially a lecturer at her alma mater and from 2013 at the Łazarski University in Warsaw. Since 2016 she has also been a lecturer and director of the State University for Judiciary and Public Prosecutor's Office, where she held state examination examinations for trainee judges, prosecutors and attorneys. She teaches and publishes in particular in civil procedure, family and childcare law as well as in labor law.

Judging career

In 1994 Małgorzata Manowska passed the judge's examination in Warsaw with the best possible result and was then a judge first at the District Court of Warsaw-Praga, then at the Regional Court in Warsaw and from 2004 at the Higher Regional Court in Warsaw. In 2007, at the time of the first PiS government , Manowska was State Secretary in the Polish Ministry of Justice for a few months .

In 2018 she became a judge at the Supreme Court, which was headed by Małgorzata Gersdorf in the midst of the Polish constitutional crisis and a time marked by judicial reforms .

On May 25, 2020, she was appointed President of the Supreme Court by President Andrzej Duda . When the list of nominations was drawn up by the General Assembly of Supreme Court Judges, it had received the second most votes out of five nominees, 25 votes behind the first place. Duda's decision not to nominate the first place on the list of nominations has been criticized, but is legitimate, since the Polish constitution allows the head of state to choose freely from the five nominees. Andrzej Zoll , the former chairman of the Polish Constitutional Court , however, after the appointment of Manowska, denied the supreme court its independence from the ruling party PiS.

Private

Małgorzata Manowska is married and has two children.
