Andrzej Zoll (2015)

Andrzej Stanisław Zoll (born May 27, 1942 in Sieniawa ) is a Polish lawyer, judge, professor of law, was chairman of the Constitutional Court between 1993 and 1997 and from 2000 to 2006 commissioner for civil rights .

Life

In 1959 he finished the general education Tadeusz Reytan Lyceum in Warsaw and in 1964 he graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Jagiellonian University . Zoll received the Doctor iuris in 1968 and completed his habilitation in 1973. In 1998 he was awarded the title of professor. From 1991 full professor and until 2013 chairman of the chair for criminal law, with which his professional activity at the Jagiellonian University ended. Additionally full professor at the University of Law and Administration Przemyśl / Rzeszów .

Zoll is the author of over 150 academic papers, which are mainly devoted to criminal law , constitutional law and legal philosophy . He contributed to the creation of the 1997 Criminal Code. During his student days, he was curator of the Jagiellonian University Law School Library Association .

Customs was active in the Solidarność center for citizens' initiatives , which worked out reforms of the legal system between 1981 and 1992. He also took part in the round table discussions. On the recommendation of Solidarność, he held the deputy chairmanship of the state election commission, which he held in the course of the parliamentary elections in 1989 .

In 1989 he was elected to the Constitutional Court. In addition, Zoll was chairman of the state election commission in connection with the first presidential election and continued the office in the now permanent electoral body between 1991 and 1993. From November 19, 1993 until his resignation in 1997, he was President of the Constitutional Court. Between 1998 and 2000 chairman of the Legislative Council ( Rada Legislacyjna in Polish ) at the Council of Ministers . Subsequently, commissioner for civil rights during the regular term of office from June 30, 2000 to June 30, 2005 (acted provisionally until February 15, 2006).

Customs worked on a committee of the PAU . Former member and chairman of the “Committee for Ethics in Science” at the Polish Academy of Sciences . Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Polish PEN spin-off. Honorary member of the Kraków Rotary Club . Adviser at the side of Zbigniew Ćwiąkalski .

Andrzej Zoll is the son of AK officer Fryderyk Zoll (1899–1986) , grandson of lawyer Fryderyk Zoll (1865–1948) , great-grandson of lawyer and Galician MP Fryderyk Zoll (1834–1917) and great-great-grandson of Józef Chrystian Zoll ( accountant ). His son Fryderyk Zoll (* 1970) is also a professor of law.

Honorary doctorates from the University of Vilnius , Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the Medical University of Wroclaw

In 2013 he was awarded the "Erazm and Anna Jerzmanowski Prize".
