Małgorzata Szejnert (born April 28, 1936 in Warsaw ) is a Polish journalist and columnist .

Life

Szejnert spent her early childhood in Sieradz and moved to Biała Podlaska with her parents in 1939 . There she attended the girls' high school from 1948 to 1953. After graduating from high school, she began studying journalism at Warsaw University in 1953 . As a student in 1956, she headed the cultural section of Horyzonty magazine . After finishing her studies in 1958, she worked for the courier Polski and then for the Tygodnik Demokratyczny . In the late 1970s she worked for the weekly magazine Literatura . In August 1980 she was co-author of the strike paper of the Szczecin shipyard . After martial law was declared in Poland , she lost her job with the magazine Literatura . In 1984 she went to New York and worked for the local newspaper Nowy Dziennik . In 1986 she returned to Poland and in 1989 co-founded Gazeta Wyborcza , where she was head of the reporting department for nearly 15 years. Since she retired in 2004, she has devoted herself mainly to writing.

She lives in Warsaw.
