Maame Biney (born January 28, 2000 in Accra , Ghana) is a Ghanaian - American short tracker . In 2018 she was the first black female speed skater on a US Olympic team to take part in the Olympic Games.
Life
Biney was born in Accra, Ghana. She moved to the United States at the age of five to live with her father. Biney began ice skating in Northern Virginia when she was six. She started out with figure skating , but switched to speed skating on the recommendation of a coach .
In 2017, Biney won the bronze medal over 500 meters at the Short Track Junior World Championships in Innsbruck . She made her senior team debut later that year when she won the America's Cup in qualifying for the US Speed Skating Short Track World Cup. On December 16, 2017, Biney qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang by winning the 500 meters in the US Olympic Qualifications, becoming the second African-born athlete to join the US after Madagascar-born biathlete Dan Westover in 1998 represented at the Winter Olympics.
At the 2018 Olympic Games, Biney did not get beyond her qualifying run in the 1500 meters and was ousted from the 500-meter race in the quarter-finals.
After her return from the 2018 Olympic Games, Biney did well at the Short Track Junior World Championships in Tomaszów Mazowiecki , winning gold over 500 meters, bronze over 1000 meters and bronze in the overall standings.
She won the bronze medal in the 1500 meters at the Four Continents Championships in Montreal in January 2020 .
