features

butterfly

The wingspan of the male moth is about 14 to 18 millimeters. Front and rear wings are colored brown-gray to black-gray. The middle field of the same color is delimited by indistinct transverse lines and provided with a black discal spot. Female moths have about half the narrower and about a quarter shorter wings, which severely restricts their ability to fly. This is also known as sexual dimorphism . The hind wings show a blurred or hardly recognizable drawing. In the males, the antennae are ciliated briefly.

Caterpillar

The caterpillars are short, thick, with transverse folds and of a dark, red-brown basic color. A black back line partially lined with yellow runs on the back. It also has yellow side stripes.

distribution and habitat

The species occurs in the high altitudes of mountains, mainly in the Alpine countries , but also in Fennoscandinavia , in the Urals as well as in Yakutia and Kamchatka . Macaria fusca rises to heights of 3400 meters. The main habitat are barren alpine meadows and rocky karst landscapes.

Way of life

The male moths are diurnal and fly in the sunshine in search of the females. These usually sit quietly in the vegetation and only occasionally fly very short distances. The main flight times are July and August. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various lower plants and overwinter.

Danger

In Germany, Macaria fusca occurs only in the Bavarian Alps, but here in large numbers. The species is listed on the Red List of Threatened Species as a species with geographical restrictions.
