Machhiwara is a city in the Indian state of Punjab .
The city is part of the Ludhiana district . Machhiwara has the status of a Municipal Council. The city is divided into 13 wards (constituencies).
history
In 1555 the battle of Machhiwara between the Surides and the Mughal Empire took place here. It ended with a victory for the Mughal rulers.
Demographics
The city's population is 24,916 according to the 2011 census. Machhiwara has a gender ratio of 902 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The literacy rate was 73.6% in 2011. Almost 57% of the population are Hindus , around 40% are Sikhs , around 2% are Muslims and around 1% belong to another or no religion. 13.4% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
