Lajka Island ( English ; Russian Остров Лайка Ostrow Laika ) is an island off the Knox coast of the East Antarctic Wilkesland . It is located in the area of the Bunger Oasis .
Scientists on a Soviet Antarctic expedition mapped it in 1956. It is named after the bitch Laika , who was the first living creature to be brought into orbit around the earth by humans during the 1957 Sputnik-2 mission . The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia translated the Russian name into English.
