Economic development in Rwanda

Rwanda has been the partner country of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1982. Around 75% of the population in Rwanda make a living from agriculture, mainly the inhabitants cultivate the soil for their own needs. Only 6.7% have a job in industry.

Due to the limited cultivation area and the high population density, the development of the industrial and service sectors will play an important role for the future of the country. Since the genocide in 1994 , much of the infrastructure has been restored.

The economic development of Rwanda, measured by the expected increase in gross domestic product in 2018 and 2019, is better than in other sub-Saharan countries . The main driving forces behind the positive development are agriculture, construction and the service sector. The manufacturing sector in Rwanda is relatively weak - one of the greatest obstacles to successful development is the lack of industrial skilled workers.

The company behind the project - rema fertigungstechnik gmbh

The company was founded in 1994 by Reiner Rudolphi. In the meantime, rema is a medium-sized company in the field of metal processing with 70 employees and offers the following product areas: CNC series parts, precision parts, devices & components, aluminum profile processing, stamping technology and industrial projects.

In September 2016, the first three young people from Rwanda started their training program to become a cutting machine operator. The project participants are selected by the Ministry of Education of Rwanda and are among the best graduates of the Integrated Polytechnic Regional College (IPRC Huye). The rema company ensures that at least one woman belongs to a group of three apprentices.

With this training, the company rema wants to support the further development of an industrial base in Rwanda in cooperation with the Rwandan Ministry of Education.

The young people from Rwanda do not only receive technical expertise. After an intensive German language course in Rockenhausen, combined with internships in the company, training in the German dual system begins one year later . The aim of the project is to enable the participants to have a professional future in Rwanda. One component of the partnership with Rwanda is the establishment of a manufacturing plant in the Rwandan capital Kigali . Preparations for this are currently being made together with various Rwandan ministries.
