Machmud of Astrakhan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Khan Mäxmüd von Astrakhan (*?; † 1470s) was one of the sons of Kuchuk Muhammed and a Genghisid who founded the Astrakhan Khanate in the 1460s .

After years of fighting for the throne of the Golden Horde against his brother Akhmat Khan , he fled to Xacitarxan near present-day Astrakhan and built an independent khanate there. He was able to maintain peaceful relations with his powerful neighbors, the Nogaier Horde and the Khanate of the Golden Horde, and minted his own money.

A letter to the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II , posted on April 10, 1466, is an example of diplomatic letters in the Kipchak Tatar language of the 15th century . This is about a renewal of the diplomatic relationship between Astrakhan and Istanbul and the sending of ambassadors.
