Way of life

Young fish feed on aquatic insects, but as adult specimens switch their food spectrum exclusively to prey fish. During the rainy season the animals migrate to the floodplains and only retreat into the main stream when the water level drops. They prefer water temperatures of 22 to 28 ° C. Macrochirichthys macrochirus is very sensitive to water pollution .

use

Macrochirichthys macrochirus is a freshly marketed fish with good meat quality, but very boneless. In Laos, they are mostly grilled, made into padek and sold as ponne pa. A certain percentage of the catch is exported from Laos to Thailand. It is mainly caught with gillnets. As an ornamental fish, it was not suitable because of its size.
