Mad Maze is an Italian thrash metal band from Modena that was founded in 2002 under the name Absence of Light , disbanded in 2006 and has been active again since 2010.

history

The band was founded in 2002, called Absence of Light and played covers of various Thrash Metal songs and a few original compositions. The cast consisted of singer Alberto Dettori, drummer Mirko Virdis, bassist Marco Quartieri and guitarists Luca Venturelli and Paolo Schioppa. Without ever having recorded a sound carrier, it was dissolved in 2006. The members then initially devoted themselves to other projects.

However, they never lost touch with each other. At the beginning of 2010 Venturelli decided to write their own songs together with Virdis and Dettori and to found the band again. Alberto Baroni, who Virdis and Dettori knew from their joint activities at Unbirth, joined Schioppa as a replacement . The line-up was supplemented by bassist Eddie Cantoni. Mad Maze was chosen as the new band name.

Towards the end of the year the EP No Time Left ... was released as a self- release , which contains four songs. As a result, the band reached a record deal with Punishment 18 Records . Cantoni left the line-up to devote himself to his main band Dumper . Andrea "Kase" Casari was briefly added as a replacement. After writing songs for a debut album in early 2011, the group headed into the studio to record the album entitled Frames of Alienation . Mirco "Mibbe" Bennati played the bass. The material was then mixed by Simone Mularoni at Domination Studio and mastered by Andy Classen at Stage One Studio . The publication took place in early 2012. Then came Luca Paolini as bassist and Danny Schiavina as singer.

style

Andreas Schiffmann from musikreviews.de wrote in his review of Frames of Alienation that you can hear ordinary Thrash Metal on it, which is kept politically and in a "brisk one-two-beat". On the album there is “energetic thrashing with pithy vocals”, which “was produced boldly and played accurately”. Dettori's singing occasionally reminds one of Russ Anderson's ( Forbidden ). In addition, the group does not always focus on catchiness in the songs, but also compose more verbose. Walter from metal.de , who also reviewed the album, found the band to be strongly oriented towards the old Thrash Metal sound from the San Francisco Bay Area . The music is very conventional and reminds of groups like Exodus , Death Angel and Heathen .
