The Madagascar stonechat ( Saxicola sibilla or Saxicola torquatus sibilla ) is a small songbird belonging to the genus of meadow chatter ( Saxicola ) and the flycatcher family (Muscicapidae).

It was originally (and is partially still) considered a subspecies of the European stonechat , but was classified as a separate species by Ewan Urquhart and Adam Bowley in 2002.

features

This small bird is very similar to the African stonechat, but has more black on the throat and only a little orange-red on the upper side of the chest in the male.

distribution and habitat

The Madagascar stonechat is endemic to Madagascar .

The following subspecies can be distinguished:

  • Saxicola sibilla ankaratrae , ( Solomon Islands , 1934), central Madagascar to the west coast, significantly larger
  • Saxicola sibilla tsaratananae , ( Milon , 1950), Tsaratanana massif in the north
  • Saxicola sibilla sibilla nominate form in the rest of the country
