Madog ap Rhiryd

Madog ap Rhiryd (before 1088, † around 1113) was a Welsh prince in the 12th century.

He was a son of Prince Rhiryd ap Bleddyn von Powys , who died together with his brother Madog in 1088 in the battle against Rhys ap Tewdwr , the Prince of Deheubarth . The rule of Powys then took over his uncles Cadwgan and Iorwerth ap Bleddyn .

After his cousin Owain ap Cadwgan , a son of Cadwgan, had robbed the Welsh princess Nest ferch Rhys , the wife of the Anglo-Norman Lord Stephen de Windsor, Madog and his brother Ithel ap Rhiryd drove their uncle Cadwgan from his territories in Powys on behalf of the Anglo- Norman in 1110 and Ceredigion . In the same year, however, Madog joined his cousin Owain. Together they waged a guerrilla war against the Anglo-Norman settlers in West Wales. After murdering a leader of the settlers, William of Brabant, they were evicted from Powys by their uncle Iorwerth ap Bleddyn, who had succeeded Cadwgan as ruler of Powys. With the support of Llywarch ap Trahern , the ruler of Arwystli , Madog then murdered Iorwerth in Caereinion . The rule of Powys then fell back to Cadwgan, but this was also murdered in 1111 by Madog near Welshpool . Powys now fell to his cousin Owain. The fugitive Madog was caught in 1113 by his uncle Maredudd , the commander of Owain's bodyguard, and handed over to Owain. Owain blinded the murderer of his father and his uncle , his further fate is unknown.
