The Madonna Ansidei , also called Pala Ansidei or Blenheim Madonna , is an altar painting by Raphael . The depicted is the enthroned Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus, accompanied by John the Baptist and St. Nicholas of Bari .

In 1885 the National Gallery in London purchased the painting for ₤ 70,000, according to another source for ₤ 75,000.

history

The picture is the last in a series of pictures of the Virgin that Raffael painted during his collaboration with Perugino in Perugia and is one of the first large altarpieces by the 23-year-old artist. The Pala was commissioned by Niccolo Ansidei, and it was intended for an altar in the Cappella San Niccolò di Bari, the family chapel of the Ansidei in the Servite church of San Fiorenzo in Perugia. In 1764, as part of a comprehensive renovation of the church, the picture was acquired by Robert Spencer (1666–1688) and replaced in the 18th century by a copy by Nicola Antonio Monti (1736–1795). From the hands of Robert Spencer it passed into the possession of his youngest brother Charles Spencer , 3rd Duke of Marlborough, who had it installed in Blenheim Palace that same year .

Predella: Sermon of John the Baptist, 1505

In 1858 George Spencer-Churchill, 8th Duke of Marlborough, sold the painting to the National Gallery.

Of the three predelle paintings that originally belonged to the altarpiece, only one has survived, which is also kept in the National Gallery. The picture shows the "Sermon of John the Baptist" in the format 26 × 53 cm.

technology

The picture was cleaned, scientifically examined and restored in the National Gallery in 1956. According to the restoration report, the picture is made of poplar wood with a plaster primer on which a mixture of white lead , finely ground colorless glass and yellow lead was applied. Walnut oil served as a binding agent for the color pigments. In addition to ultramarine , azurite was also used for the blue cloak of the Madonna . The inscription on the throne is made of gold leaf, as are the halves of the four people. Silver and gold were used for the borders on the cloak of John the Baptist. The use of silver on other parts of the picture darkened the colors in question.

reception

The Ansidei Madonna is one of Raphael's works, which were reproduced again and again in engravings and lithographs, in some cases in large editions, and distributed, especially in the 19th century.

The Ansidei Madonna was the motif of a 20-cent postage stamp from Anguilla in 1971 .
