Madonna and Child in Beurig

The sculpture Madonna and Child in the Church of the Visitation in Beurig , a district of Saarburg in the district of Trier-Saarburg in Rhineland-Palatinate was created around 1400 and repeatedly re- taken .

The Gothic sculpture is a flat wooden figure that is only 11 cm deep and 72 cm high without the base. According to legend , the Mother of God with child sitting on a simple bench was found in a wooded part of Beurig at the time and venerated as a miraculous image .

Mary's head is girlishly soft and sharply emphasized in profile. The base of the neck is long. The crown on the head was renewed and the figure was recast after 1945. Sitting on his right knee, the naked child Jesus with a round, coarse head grabs his crossed leg with his right hand and the mother's breast with the other hand. Mary's broad cloak becomes richly pleated in front of her knees. Her high-belted dress slides over her pointed shoes.
