Ishak Pasha

Ishak Pascha ( Turkish İshak Paşa ; * 1444 , † January 30, 1487 in Thessaloniki ) was an Ottoman statesman and general. He was Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire .

Life

It is believed that Ishak Pasha came from Albania. The Turkish orientalist Halil İnalcık (1916–2016) believed that Ishak Pasha was "created" by confusing several Ottoman Ishak Pasha (especially Ishak bin Abdullah and Ishak bin Ibrahim) and Ishak Beys, but he also believes Ishak Pasha is Albanian- been stocky. The German orientalist Franz Babinger (1891-1967), on the other hand, thinks that Ishak Pascha was of Greek origin.

Around 1451 he was appointed Beylerbey (provincial governor) of Eyâlet Anatolia . In the same year the new Sultan Mehmet II forced him to marry the widow of his father Murad II , Sultan Hatun . From 1454 to 1456 Ishak Pasha took part as Beylerbey of Anatolia in campaigns to Serbia, also in the siege of Belgrade and the Ottoman campaign in Wallachia .

His first tenure as Grand Vizier was from 1469 to 1472 during the reign of Mehmed II. During this tenure, he relocated Oghuzen from the Anatolian city of Aksaray to the conquered Constantinople in order to populate the city, since the original population as part of the conquest of Constantinople in Year 1453 had been decimated. The district where the migrants settled is now called Aksaray.

His second term ran during the change from Sultan Mehmed II to Bayezid II from 1481 to 1482. As "Guardian of the Throne" he was responsible for the succession of the Sultan and had to maintain order in the palace, which was created by the Janissaries during the fighting between Bayezid and his brother Cem was in danger. Eventually Bayezid was able to ascend the throne and Ishak Pasha withdrew from his position as Grand Vizier. The Sultan appointed Koca Davud Pasha as the new Grand Vizier. Ishak pasha became Sanjakbey of Thessaloniki, where he died on January 30, 1487.
