The Madraza de Granada ( Arabic ﻣﺩﺭﺴة, "School"; also Yusufiyya , Casa de la Ciencia ("House of Sciences"), Palacio de la Madraza ) was the madrasa or university of the Moorish Granada ; it was in 1349 by Yusuf I. founded. Today the building on Calle Oficios belongs to the Universidad de Granada and is used for cultural purposes. In addition, the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias has here . your seat.

The location of the building is central; originally it was located next to the great mosque of Granada, which was later replaced by the current cathedral . During the Moorish times, law, medicine and mathematics were taught here.

building

The original building, built by order of Yusuf I, had a magnificent entrance made of white marble, the remains of which are now in the Museo Arqueológico de Granada , and was built around a central courtyard with a fountain. The facade was decorated with texts, among which sources, according to sources, also found the following: “Desires to study your mind and to escape the darkness of ignorance, you will find the beautiful tree of honor here. The study enables gifted people to shine like stars and puts others in the same position ”.

The current building has a very different appearance; after Christian Spain took control of Granada, the original structure was expanded and rebuilt in the Mudejar style . Further significant alterations took place in the 18th century; only parts of the facade and the prayer hall remain from the original building.

history

According to the Treaty of Granada (1491), the building served as a madrasa until 1499/1500. With the arrival of Archbishop Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros , the time of tolerance in Granada ended; Cisneros had the books of the madrasa brought to the nearby Bib-Rambla square and burned there. Together with his practice of forced conversion, this led to the first Moors revolt . The building of the madrasa was given to the city council of Granada in 1500.

The building is currently managed by the University of Granada. Archaeological excavations were carried out in 2006/2007, after which the building was restored; it has been open to the public again since 2011.
