Maestro de Campo , called Sibale Island by the residents and also known in its historical spelling Maestre de Campo , is the name of an island in the Philippines that belongs to the Philippine province of Romblon . It is located off the coast of Mindoro Island , approx. 20 kilometers west of the municipality of Gloria , at the transition from Isla Verde Strait to Tablas Strait . The municipality of Concepcion is the only settlement on the approximately 19.82 km² island ; In 2007 it had 4,166 inhabitants.
Maestro de Campo is best known in the Philippines because the third of the five so-called naval battles of La Naval de Manila took place off its coast on July 31, 1646 . In addition, in front of the island lies the wreck of the Mactan ferry , which sank in the night of July 15 to 16, 1973 and is popular with divers.
The island can be reached from the ports on Tablas and Mindoro . The crossing from Gloria takes about an hour.
